Corporate giant Nufarm operated a chemical factory at 100 and 102 McBryde St Fawkner from 1957-1974. After the EPA found that the site was heavily contaminated with dioxins, the company was ordered to clean it up. The factory was demolished in the early 1990’s. Some of the contaminated soil was removed and a clay cap put over the site. Now there is an application to build warehouses on 102 McBryde St. Residents fear the clay cap could be penetrated by construction or degraded by semi-trailers, releasing toxins.
